Do We Believe When We Pray?
Isn't it amazing how we pray for something and then when God answers, we find it hard to believe? But when we prayed, we asked in faith that our prayer would be heard. This is exactly what was happening in Acts chapter 12. The believers were praying and when The Father answered their prayers, they could not believe it. Just last night I prayed that The Father would release one of my beloved nieces from bondage. Right now I should be believing that she will be released. And I am, but what if she shows up on my doorstep totally free! Wouldn't that be awesome? And how wonderfully unbelievable it would be for all of my family who has been praying for this very thing! The sons and daughters must have felt something like that when Peter showed up! It was doubly joyous because they had already witnessed James being killed not long before. So even though they were praying for Peter's release, no doubt many had already resolved to accept it if Peter too had been slain.

Believe it, friend. I see at least three challenges to receiving what we ask for. 1) we pray for our own selfish desires, so we can spend it on our pleasures, and 2) we don't pray according to God's will, and 3) we don't believe.
Well, #1 - stop praying for Corvettes, a huge paycheck, and concentrate on #2 :) Besides, we are promised that if we seek first His kingdom, and all these things will be added as well. And He looks out for us because we are worth more than many sparrows.
#2 - God's will for us is pretty stinking good... the best! Let's start by praying for things we know are His will. Is it God's will that His children live in bondage? I don't think so. Is it His will that any of us are bound by sin, in particular? I think not! So pray for it, and believe.
#3 - Jesus constantly put faith and answers to prayer together. Nearly every time he healed someone, He said something like "your faith has healed you". So the question becomes what would we answer when asked, "Do you believe I can do this for you?"
So we are surprised when God does something cool? I think it's because we are so numb in our modern way of living that we have a hard time seeing how He is already at work. The things and possessions and busy-ness and all that kinda blinds us I think.
